posted in: Documentary, PhillyCAM Voices, Video | 0

After losing her son Danny to an overdose, Mariellen Paulus saw a gap in the system: the “30-day cliff.” Today, Danny’s House provides Philadelphia women with the one thing the city’s budget often misses—time. Two years of support. A mandatory savings program. A community of sisters. A path to dignity.

In this segment Tom and I explore the extraordinary story of a grassroots halfway house in the Mt Airy section of Philadelphia. We were welcome into Danny’s house to interview the founder, board member, a councilor and two alumi guest of Danny’s House. These girls went through a lot to get to Danny’s House. Through drugs abuse and the things that people to do to support their habit women are arriving a Danny’s House broken and are restore to dignity. Danny’s House’s relapse rates are far lower than the national relapse rates. We explore why Danny’s House is different and why their relapse rates are lower.

We shot this segment with a Sony A7. I wished I would have had the prime 50mm lens for better rack focus but I was happy with the overall composition, color and sound. We used a led light kit, one light a key light and one to light the background. We still have much to learn about light on a creative side level. The segment was once again edited with Premiere Pro. I used AI to help build the story but in the end the story required listening and building. Below are the credits to the segment:
